Over the last decades, the quality of the Mediterranean environment has been increasingly degraded by anthropisation. Rapid urbanisation, water scarcity, pollution, are some of the factors that generate major environmental problems expected to be exacerbated by climate change.
The Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE) organises this conference to gather Environmental and Resource Economists who work on environmental problems in the Mediterranean area and reinforce cooperation to achieve an environmental and sustainable development in the Mediterranean. The conference, which is organised back-to-back to the IAERE Annual Conference, intends to relaunch the proposal presented by IAERE at the EAERE annual conference in Manchester which received support by several colleagues working on the proposed topic but was subsequently put on hold due to the outbreak of the pandemic. Both Conferences will be held in a hybrid format, to encourage participation of people who cannot attend the event in presence.
This conference is meant as a platform aiming at:
• creating a network of environmental and resource economists active in the Mediterranean region;
• contributing towards global progress on environmental issues regarding the Mediterranean region;
• contributing to the long-term sustainable development vision for the Mediterranean region, especially within the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
• discussing about policy options that may contribute to the objectives of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development 2016-2025;
• offering a space for reflection and debate for the preparation of proposals to face environmental challenges in the Mediterranean Region;
• identifying common environmental problems affecting Mediterranean countries and corresponding policy solutions.
IAERE, as promoter of this initiative, would like to invite scientists working on environmental problems in the Mediterranean area as well as institutes and organisations carrying out research or active in the Mediterranean Region to contribute to the conference submitting research papers and/or presenting funded projects focusing on environmental issues in the Med area.

Country representative and members of the other national associations in the Mediterranean area belonging to EAERE will be invited to participate in a roundtable discussion and/or policy session in the MED-IAERE Conference on the most urgent environmental challenges in the Mediterranean area. The conference will be held in hybrid format to also allow participation from remote for those who cannot take part to the event in presence. Those who wish to attend also the IAERE Annual Conference are most welcome.
