IAERE has selected Proxies for the Past by Jill Pelto as official artwork of the 9th IAERE Annual Conference. Proxies for the Past is inspired by the universal unknowns, which humans try to solve by using materials such as ice cores, tree rings, and lichens to date past climate events. Nature reveals some of its’ secrets in these concentric forms, allowing us to determine information such as the data depicted: the average global temperature of Earth from 11,000 years ago to present. Thus, natural materials help us to understand a small portion of Earth’s history.

More about the artist: Jill Pelto creatively communicates information about environmental issues with a broad audience. Her passion is constructing new ways to communicate science through art. She sees nature as a work of art, and the origin of her observational skills. In fact, scientific research and data fuel the content of her artwork. She creates pieces that raise awareness about interesting and important environmental topics. The key topic in her portfolio is climate change data: melting glaciers, rising sea level, threatened species. She hopes to cover both positive and negative issues that depict the reality of our current ecosystem. You can explore her artworks here.
